Title

Language Use and Structure

Learning Outcome

Analyze and research the structure and use of language to identify appropriate usage and style in specific contexts and assess the effectiveness of traditional usage rules and style guidelines. Be able to write effectively and speak clearly to communicate language analysis, research, and editing decisions to authors, editors, and others. Cultivate an appreciation for the divine gift of language and its history and development, and hone an attention to detail that will serve in editing and publishing careers and in temporal and spiritual life.

Copyediting and Substantive Editing

Learning Outcome

Enhance clarity and effectiveness of sentences, paragraphs, and longer texts for readers by applying research-based principles of effective usage, style, and organization to written text. Develop and refine the skill of careful reading and analysis and the ability to learn about new subjects in order to produce edits that will contribute to an accurate and effective text while deepening knowledge of and perspective on the world. Strengthen Christlike characteristics such as patience, compassion, and understanding while providing honest and constructive feedback and helping writers find and refine their voice within stylistic bounds.

Specialized Editing

Learning Outcome

Demonstrate specialized skills and the perspective required by at least one editing genre (such as magazine publishing, technical communication, book publishing, scholarly publishing, or freelance publishing) to meet the needs of a specific purpose, audience, and context. Understand how specialized skills can be connected to competencies that apply across multiple genres, gaining the confidence to expand the skills into lifelong learning and service in a variety of contexts.

Learning Outcome

Use and appreciate the tools, historical traditions, and processes that are part of the publishing business, such as software for, methods of, and ethical procedures relating to graphic design, teamwork, printing technology, project management, and income and expense management, and understand how these tools, methods, and ethical procedures can be used to benefit the world.

Foreign Language Requirement:

Complete university course work (or the equivalent) to a 200-level or higher in any single foreign language including American Sign Language. The language for this requirement may be the same language used to satisfy the GE Foreign Language option. Editing students may waive this language requirement by completing a university-approved minor that includes complex professional discourse modes, such as STEM fields, business, psychology, social sciences, English literature, or rhetoric.
